Expert cask repair, re-charring and premium specialty cask supply for Scotch whisky distilleries across Scotland. Independent. Family-owned. Built for the long term.
Based in Rutherglen, just south of Glasgow, Alba Cooperage was founded with a clear purpose: to bring independent, hands-on cooperage expertise to Scotland’s Scotch whisky distilleries.
The adventure began only a few years ago — but our team carries over 15 years of industry experience. In 2025, the Icons of Whisky honoured us with the title of Cooperage of the Year — recognising the quality of our craft and the dedication of every cooper on our team.
We are independent and intend to stay that way. While larger cooperage groups are acquired and consolidated, Alba remains a craft business — one where every cask is handled by a named cooper, not a logistics system.

Our team of skilled coopers delivers the complete range of cask services for Scotch whisky distilleries — from first inspection to custom re-charring and monthly cask supply.
Every cask inspected, every fault addressed — extending cask life and protecting your maturation programme.
Exposing fresh oak grain and re-charring to precise levels — giving used casks renewed maturation performance.
Raising, assembling, shaping and resizing — all mechanical operations to bring a cask to distillery-ready standard.
Our mobile unit travels directly to your distillery — reducing logistics costs and downtime for on-site cask work.
Supporting distilleries with tracking, storage coordination and full cask lifecycle planning.
Monthly curated cask lists — ex-wine, ex-Sherry, ex-Port and specialty origins, hand-selected for Scotch maturation.

Alba’s turnaround time and the consistency of their re-charring work is exceptional. Every cask that comes back has been treated as if it were going into our flagship expression. We’ve been working with them since they opened and wouldn’t go elsewhere.
Their mobile cooperage service is a genuine game-changer for us — having Stevie and the team come on-site means we avoid weeks of logistics downtime. The quality of the cask inspection and repair is second to none. The award was well-deserved.
We were looking for an independent cooperage — one that wasn’t going to be absorbed by a larger group mid-contract. Alba ticked every box: NCF-certified, local, and genuinely passionate about the craft. The specialty cask sourcing through the Taranis group is a real bonus.
Backed by the Taranis Cooperage Group, Alba invests in techniques and technologies that give distilleries more precise, more sustainable maturation tools — without compromising the quality of the craft.
Our mobile cooperage travels directly to distilleries across Scotland — repair, re-charring and inspection on-site, reducing logistics costs and carbon footprint.
Available nowPrecise infrared charring technology delivering highly consistent char levels — more repeatable and controllable than traditional gas-fired methods.
In developmentCombining stave types, oak origins or char levels in a single cask — bespoke maturation profiles for distilleries seeking unique expressions.
On requestThe Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009 (as amended) define precisely what casks are permitted for maturation, and which wood types qualify for different Scotch categories. This is the reference guide your procurement team needs.
All Scotch whisky must be matured in oak casks not exceeding 700 litres. There is no minimum size. The 700L maximum applies to all five categories (Malt, Grain, Blended Malt, Blended Grain, Blended Scotch).
Any oak species is technically permitted — but the dominant wood used commercially is Quercus alba (American white oak) and Quercus robur / petraea (European oak).
| Wood Species | Common Name | Typical Cask Type | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quercus alba | American White Oak | Ex-Bourbon Barrel, Hogshead | Permitted |
| Quercus robur | European Oak (Pedunculate) | Ex-Sherry Butt, Ex-Wine | Permitted |
| Quercus petraea | European Oak (Sessile) | Ex-Wine, French Barrique | Permitted |
| Quercus mongolica | Mizunara Oak | Japanese casks | Permitted since 2019 |
The regulations do not explicitly restrict the previous contents of casks — the key constraint is the wood type and size. However, industry practice and spirit character expectations effectively define which previous uses are appropriate:
| Previous Use | Cask Type | Effect on Spirit |
|---|---|---|
| American Bourbon | Ex-Bourbon Barrel / Hogshead | Vanilla, coconut, sweet oak |
| Sherry (Oloroso, PX, Fino) | Sherry Butt (500L) / Puncheon | Dried fruit, spice, richness |
| Port (Tawny, Ruby, LBV) | Port Pipe (550L) / Quarter Cask | Berry, chocolate, dried fruit |
| Red Wine (Bordeaux, Burgundy) | Barrique (225L) / Hogshead | Tannins, dark fruit, structure |
| Fortified Wine (Madeira, Marsala) | Various | Nutty, oxidative, complex |
| Rum | Ex-Rum Barrel | Tropical fruit, molasses |
| Virgin Oak | New American / French Oak | Heavy oak, vanilla, tannin |
The regulations permit re-used casks — including those that have held Scotch whisky previously. Our regenerated casks are de-charred and re-charred in our Rutherglen cooperage to expose fresh oak grain, restoring maturation performance while keeping costs lower than fresh casks.
There is no regulatory minimum for how many times a cask can be re-used, though industry practice typically retires casks after 3–5 fills as extraction rates decline.
| Format | Approx. Capacity | Typical Origin |
|---|---|---|
| Quarter Cask | ~50L | Various |
| Barrel | ~190L | American Bourbon |
| Hogshead | ~250L | Reassembled from Bourbon staves |
| Barrique | 225L | French wine regions |
| Puncheon | ~500L | Sherry / Rum |
| Butt | ~500L | Sherry (Jerez) |
| Port Pipe | ~550L | Douro, Portugal |
All formats above are within the SWA 700L maximum. Casks above 700L (e.g., Foudres, Tuns) are not permitted for Scotch maturation.
